Autism Facts

Hello! Welcome to our Website!

Since 2013, Scarborough Autism and Special Needs Services has provided free information and support on local resources that are "autism" and "homeschooling" related to those who are affected directly (or indirectly) with autism in our community.  This website was created to provide a place where a variety of information and resources about homeschooling someone with autism could be obtained in one place.  We hope the information and resources here will be helpful to support homeschooling families who are touched by Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).

Support Learning At Home

In Canada, there are considerable different levels of support in each province or territory for students with autism and disabilities in general. Some areas offer more support than others and some don’t comply with the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities which ensure that students with special needs are getting equal educational opportunities.

In Ontario, effective schooling and educational resources for those with severe autism are extremely limited and the Government does not offer any funding/grant assistance or other financial support for homeschooling families regardless of disabilities.

While school boards in Ontario say that they have a clear mandate to uphold the rights of children with disabilities, in our personal experience, our school system has yet to implement fully inclusive educational practices for those with autism.  We have experienced that special education services and resources are considered a “luxury” and have been cut off from receiving help and support where it is needed most due to staffing or funding shortages within the school system.  The school system will “accommodate” in terms of placement, but they are not even remotely close to anything acceptable and will NOT teach in a way that a child with autism can learn as they offer very little resources and equipment to help.

Many parents with autistic children have given up hope that the school system can help their child. Parents begin homeschooling and find instantly that homeschooling provides a much better support system and access to services and resources that the school system can’t offer.

Parental advocacy for a child with autism is needed in every situation, regardless if your child is in school or homeschooled.

A parent is a vital partner in their child’s education. Children are more likely to be motivated to improve their learning and develop positive behaviour and social skills when a parent is actively involved in their learning.

Your child deserves a customized homeschool curriculum that will meet their learning style and academic level. We encourage all parents to support learning at home.

Many people visit the Scarborough Autism and Special Needs Services website but unlike many other sites, we have not put up a paywall.  We want to keep our information and content as free and open as we can.  This independent website and free downloads we offer takes a lot of time, money and hard work to produce, but we do it because we believe our perspective matters – and it might be your perspective as well.  The future of this site can be secured in providing access to information about autism to others.  Any financial help of $1 or more from those who contribute to support this site is greatly appreciated.  Thank you.
