Are You Qualified to Homeschool your Child

A "School Teacher" is someone who has pursued a standard teaching degree and received a diploma stating that they officially are a “School Teacher” have been educated with many different strategies and methods that are designed to apply to a classroom with more than 20 children.  Even “Special Education Teachers” that work specifically with students who have disabilities have at least 8 children in their classroom.  Stating this fact does not in any way indicate that we don’t appreciate their hard work or devalue their credentials, it just means that their “diploma” does not apply to homeschooling.  With homeschooling, there are no “official requirements” needed to homeschool your children so realistically; you do not need to worry about these particular types of qualifications.  Homeschooled students have parents who are far more educated than the traditional “Special Education Teachers”.

You ARE the "Professional Expert" on your child. Be 101% confident that no one knows your child better than you do and simply pay no attention to anyone that tells you otherwise. A parent is a natural teacher for their child. You have been teaching your child since they were born. You have spent years with them. You know how they learn and what they like and what they don’t like. You can tell what they are thinking by their emotions and actions if they are happy or excited or scared or confused simply by the sounds they make or their body language. You can tell when they are feeling well and know when they feel unwell. You know what is realistic for them to learn and do.

Realistically, how can anyone believe or expect a standard teacher who obtains a generalized education degree, which includes no specific training or experience in autism support, to be responsible for teaching a classroom with multiple students with various needs, all at the same time, while consistently meeting the individual and unique needs of your child?

It just isn't possible.

Your child does not need a stranger with a diploma or the famous “faceless team of geniuses” who also have degrees who maybe meet with you 2 or 3 times and may or may not check on them once every year if they have time to do so.

What they truly require and need is a resourceful and committed parent who is willing to spend the majority of their day with them, to motivate them with activities, to help them find answers to their questions, to work with them on their challenges, to support them with their difficulties, to believe in them and raise their confidence, and most of all, love them unconditionally through their lives to help them be the best that they can be, as simple or as complicated as they are! Under these conditions, only then will these children thrive and learn effectively. This type of dedication and support is not humanly possible and will never be met within the school system.

By strengthening the relationship between you and your child with trust and confidence, the learning process and homeschooling experience will happen successfully. Be sure to address any issues that come up to help make the situation better and focus on the overall and bigger picture. Your child’s individuality and ways of thinking are unique. Capturing your child’s academic potential is simpler than you think. Homeschooling releases your child from boundaries or restrictions when it comes to their learning as it gives them the ability for creative freedom. Be willing to offer your children different ideas and choices and letting them have time to choose what they would like to focus on. This will help give them the motivation to be further engaged when taking on a task and continue learning.

Many parents feel unsure of themselves when they decide to homeschool their child especially if there comes a time that they need to teach their child something that they don’t know how to do or know very little about the subject. It is important to remember that no one knows everything and not all tasks need to be mastered completely.

So to answer the question "Are you qualified?"

YES, YOU ARE!
