Myths About Autism

Many myths have arisen about autism over the years from stereotypes, causes, and cures. There is also a great deal of misinformation about it in the media, on TV shows and movies, and online.

Autism is not caused by “poor parenting” skills.

It also does not mean that a child is “misbehaving” or being “a problem child” or “stubborn” or “lazy” or that they require “discipline”.

Some people believe or assume that autistic individuals are emotionless, or un-affectionate or uncaring people, or zombie-like, or have no imagination, or have no personality, or all who have autism are incredibly violent or are incapable of learning....... and much more.

All of these stereotypical beliefs are nothing but misunderstanding (usually from people who have never have had any dealings with someone who has autism or at least very little interaction or experience with someone who has autism), and are very, very far from reality.

This is why it can be hard to find reliable information about what autism truly is and what it isn’t.
